Wayne A. Gilbert was a teacher/professor for thirty-seven years. Since 2000, he has performed his original poems in numerous venues and classrooms in the region, often with improvising musicians. He has published two chapbooks of poems, magmamystic and From the Ashes. In 2005, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. He uses poems about his experience with the progressive-degenerative disease to advocate and support others with the diagnosis. From 2014-2019, he received grants from The Institute for Poetic Medicine for monthly poetry sessions of Unlocked Poetry for poet-offenders at Sterling Correctional Facility in Sterling, Colorado. Gilbert received the 2018 Governor’s Creative Leadership Award through Colorado Creative Industries for his artistry and activism.
