Sabrina Dhawan(2021)

Sabrina Dhawan’s debut feature Monsoon Wedding won multiple awards, including the Leon D’Oro at the Venice Film Festival, nominations for the Golden Globes, and a BAFTA for Best Foreign Film. Other credits include Cosmopolitan for PBS and Kaminey, Rangoon, Ishqiya with Vishal Bharadwaj. She wrote the book for the stage musical adaptation of Monsoon Wedding, which premiered at Berkeley Rep in 2017 and was extended three times, making it the most successful show in their history. Her student short film Saanjh – As Night Falls won ‘Best of the Festival’ at the Palm Springs Film Festival; ‘Most Original Film’ from New Line Cinema, ‘Audience Impact’ Award at Angelus Awards, and was nominated for a Student Academy Award. She also served as co-producer on Bollywood Hero, a mini-series for IFC. Recent projects include a TV adaptation of Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie for Netflix in 2019. Current assignments include writing a feature screenplay titled Spice Route, for producer Susan Cartsonis, and developing a limited-series show of the book Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line for Filmwave Productions, UK. Dhawan is the Area Head of Screenwriting and a Professor of Dramatic Writing at the Tisch School of the Arts, NYU and has taught at filmmaking labs around the world, including India, Uganda, Tanzania Singapore, Qatar and across the USA.
