ANITA BOSE PFAFF(2018)
Anita Bose Pfaff, the only child of Subhas Bose and his Austrian wife Emilie Schenkl, was born in Vienna on 29 November 1942. She was just four weeks old when her father last saw her, prior to leaving for South East Asia to continue his quest for Indian independence. She only came to be recognised as Subhas’ daughter after her uncle visited Vienna in 1948 and was handed a letter by her mother left behind by her father. In 1960, Pfaff visited India for the first time to be given a rousing reception nationwide, especially in Kolkata. She was an honoured house guest of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, her father’s fellow campaigner in India’s freedom struggle. Pfaff, who has written the foreword to Laid to Rest: The Controversy over Subhas Chandra Bose’s Death, accepts her father died as a result of a plane crash in Taipei in 1945.
